Looking for somewhere to stay in New York can be a bit of a minefield, but choosing your location really depends on what you’re looking for. Midtown offers easy access to all the obvious tourist spots, whilst the Lower East Side is home to some amazing bars and restaurants. If you’re looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, Williamsburg’s has a cooler, more relaxed vibe. If this is you, you should definitely check out the Williamsburg Hotel; very cool.
I chose to stay in Midtown at the trendy Hudson Hotel after hearing really great things about it. It is situated on West 58th street and is a short walk from the world renowned Plaza Hotel. The Hudson is part of the Morgan group (The people behind London’s Sanderson, St Martin’s lane and The Mondrian) so I knew I would be in safe hands.
I find that hotel rooms in NYC are generally quite small, so I would recommend choosing a room one up from the bog standard otherwise you might be in for a shoebox! I went with the ‘superior suite’ as it is spacious and roomy, with enough room for all my shopping bags.
I must give a special mention to Franklin Goenaga, one of the concierges at the hotel who literally made my stay. He was so helpful from check in and went above and beyond to make my stay even more magical by gifting me a $100 breakfast token for me and my guests. Thank you Franklin.
The Hudson Hotel has been brilliantly renovated to host the flagship Umami burger. The menu focuses on gourmet burgers and fries (I highly recommend Sam’s crispy chicken burger and the TRUFFLE FRIES, OMFFGGG) after an eight hour flight it was the perfect welcome to the Big Apple. They also serve a delicious breakfast every morning.
The Hudson is also home to The Library Bar, open to the public and residents of the hotel, a chilled dark setting for a cocktail or two. Perfect for pre drinks or a little night cap.
What to do nearby
During the days I found myself wandering around the streets of Manhattan for the best little boutiques and shops. I still think London is the best shopping in the world but I did find a gem on Broadway. What Goes Around in the Lower West Side has the finest authentic luxury vintage handbags, jewellery and accessories for men and woman. You have to see it to believe it. Filled with one off Chanel bags, Hermes silk scarves and Louis Vuitton shirts, it’s soooooooo betchy. WOW.
I wasn’t allowed to take pics but being the renegade I am, I managed to sneak a few. If like me, you don’t have 3,000 dollars in spare change, it’s worth just going to have a mooch in, you may even bump into a celeb or two. Seriously, you have to see this place, wardrobe goals for life.
Williamsburg is also full of cute little vintage shops, and is New York’s answer to Shoreditch. Bedford Avenue is the main street to head towards and is home to tons of cute little bars serving craft beers and sparkling wine on tap. Oh, and it has a JOE’S PIZZA!!
